The ghost of New York. Many of you have already heard the name Peter Lake, many others discover the existence of this character with each musical release, or even through my article. Writing about an anonymous person is one of the more enjoyable challenges I have encountered so far in my career. With Lake, the word ‘’prodigy’’ comes to mind. But base on my brief phone interactions, Mr. Lake would call that ‘’ridiculous’’ and hang up on me.
Yes, I’m writing about the anonymous New York singer and songwriter Peter Lake. Many speculations hover about Lake, and his audience grows. I’m happy to get ahead of it. We only know a few facts: -anonymous identity, -no musical genre, -his passion for music, someone who says things you don’t hear much, someone who believes in what he’s doing. Honestly, nothing captivates us more than the unknown, and it is for this same reason that we continue with the insane quest to know. Is this what has captivated Peter Lake fans so much? We are talking about an anonymous artist, with more than half a million monthly listeners on Spotify, more than 10 million streams, more than half a million followers on instagram. On the other hand, I can’t help but mention the music this individual writes and sings. My checks in the industry reveal a curious preture: his producers, his ‘’team’’- they don’t know who Peter is.
In just 1 year, this artist gathered a vast array of listeners. How? Talent. It’s easy to make music, it’s hard to be heard. Without marketing, Peter Lake captured the attention of thousands, with this industry being so competitive, it’s hard for someone new to stand out, however, Lake seems to be going well, and in many ways he may be creating a new path for others to follow.
I tried to approach Peter Lake at first, messaging him on Instagram. To my surprise he responded and asked me ‘’are you a bot?’’. After proving I am not by asking to speak on the phone, he said ‘’Why not!’’ And so I spoke to the Ghost. I asked him some questions, curiosities that a writer has. I didn’t get a great answer, which is understandable since the demand for the artist must be high. But I will continue to insist that he answer me, maybe with this article he will give me the privilege of letting me interview him. As he said ‘’What’s the point of being anonymous if I have to make phone calls?’’.
After all, I would love to be one of the first to write about someone I know will make a difference in the music world. And yes, Peter, I think you are making a difference!
