Peter Lake, the anonymous New York based singer/songwriter who debuted in 2021 with a single dedicated to Dr. Osterholm has since then released 3 EPs and 6 singles. He is also working on a follow up new EP, Black & White.
Lake debuted with a house music single last April 1st.
With the release of ”Stay Baby Stay (like a lullaby)” I couldn’t hold back from interviewing the New York phenomenon about what led him to try this new musical genre.
I must emphasise the openness with which Lake responded to my questions, and the answer aroused my curiosity, which led me to write this article.
So I asked, ”How did you build this song?”
His answer:-”So, like, this one was kind of an experiment. I have a lot of songs. And had a song called ”Stay Baby Stay” which is a really nice song, and with all my songs i always think- ”if i just stripped it down to just voice or piano/ voice and guitar, does it sound good? That’s how i know.”
So I got in the studio and I told my producer to forget the original Stay Baby Stay. I wanted to make a completely new song, but this time, I wanted to express it as a hip-hop or rap song. I wrote it and told my producer that it was new and unrelated. But II secretly did it in the same tempo and key as the original one, and my producer and my engineer asked if this new song would fit in the original. Long story short, I finished the song…
Then I asked them to blend the 2 songs together, and they were like – ”oh no! They’re completely different!” But we did it, and it became the song I’m now releasing you guys know. What happens is that you have 2 songs talking to each other, you have this melodic song, and you have this harsher version with this edm kinda drum and bass vibe that is like an answer back to the other song.’’’’
Then the question arises: -‘But you were already announcing on Instagram (@peterlakemusic) the release of your new EP Black & White, won’t it come out anymore? People are curious about this topic.”
-”Well, with the creation of “Stay Baby Stay (Like a Lullaby)”, I decided to stop the schedule, which was already pre-set, and decided to release this song as a single.”
After this conversation, it is possible to understand that Lake is not an artist like so many others we hear. He is an artist who releases what he feels, in his own time, without looking at rules or plans. This is one of the many factors that makes him unique. He is loyal to his art and to his fans, a fact he made sure to highlight before the end of our conversation ”They support my dream, and in return for that support, I will never, while it’s within my reach, stop releasing music.”
I want to take the opportunity to thank Peter Lake for his availability on sharing his thoughts on music. He is an artist that I admire and really hope he succeeds in showing the world that art has no rules or formulas. As Lake tells us “My music is all about experience, exchanging between myself and whoever gets interested in what I have to deliver!”
